Preparing for a Sunrise Hike

Waking up prior to the crack of dawn on a journey to catch a beautiful sunrise is often extremely awarding. However, there are some simple steps you can take to ensure your adventure is as hassle-free and safe as possible. Check out some of our tips for pursuing your first sunrise hike.

Check the weather forecast: Before setting out, be sure to check the weather forecast for the day of your hike. If there is a chance of rain, thunderstorms or other severe weather, it may be best to postpone your hike.

Start early: Make sure you allow plenty of time to get to the trailhead and start your hike well before the sun rises. This will give you enough time to get to the summit or viewpoint in time to see the sunrise.

Bring a headlamp: Even if you start early, you may still need a headlamp or flashlight to navigate the trail in the dark. Make sure you have fresh batteries and a spare, just in case.

Dress in layers: It may be chilly at the start of your hike, but as the sun rises, temperatures can quickly warm up. Dress in layers so that you can easily adjust your clothing as needed.
Pack plenty of water and snacks: Hiking at sunrise can be a strenuous activity, so make sure you bring enough water and snacks to keep you energized and hydrated.

Sticking to these tips will make for a memorable and safe hiking experience. But lastly, remember to leave no trace! Pack out all your trash, and avoid damage to vegetation and wildlife along the way.
